Are There Times When It’s Difficult to Thank God Amidst Severe Trials?

For instance, when you’re falsely accused, hurt, ignored, used, attacked, robbed, betrayed, humiliated, mocked, abandoned, slandered, overshadowed by others’ successes, or when you feel defeated, lost, or left behind? In those moments of pain, isn’t it challenging to give thanks? Can you truly thank God while being betrayed or lied to?

1 Thessalonians 5:18 states: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Why did Paul write this to the church in Thessalonica?

What was happening at that time that made him emphasize this message? During their time, the Thessalonians faced severe persecution for their faith, yet their fervor for God remained strong despite the opposition. That’s why Paul encouraged them in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to thank God in every situation, because it is God’s will.

In fact, Paul sent Timothy to strengthen their faith so they wouldn’t be discouraged amidst their sufferings (1 Thessalonians 3:2-3). Paul explained that these persecutions were also part of God’s will. Additionally, he reminded the Thessalonians to live holy lives, to abstain from immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3), and to increase their love for one another (1 Thessalonians 4:10b). This demonstrates that enduring trials, facing disappointments, experiencing loss, and being tested are also part of God’s will for us.

How Can We Learn to Thank God Even in Times of Hardship, Trials, or Persecution?

As believers, how can we maintain holiness, live peacefully, grow in joy, and remain steadfast in love despite hardships? The answer lies in 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

When we thank God despite life’s challenges, we align ourselves with His will. In doing so, we glorify Him, express our love for Him, and worship Him even in pain.

Practical Tips for Cultivating Gratitude Amidst Hardships

Here are three practical habits that helped me during one of the darkest seasons of my life, which I wrote about in my book Blooming Amore: Creating a Beautiful Life.

  1. Gratitude Journal. Begin your day by writing down everything you see, hear, feel, smell, taste, think, do, or experience, no matter how small. For example: “Thank You, Lord, for the sunlight that woke me up today.” “Thank You, Lord, for the breakfast I ate.” Writing down even the smallest blessings trains your heart to focus on the good, even in difficult times. Over time, you can look back on your entries and be reminded of God’s faithfulness.

2. Prayer. If writing isn’t enough, turn to God in prayer. Thank Him not only for the good things but also for the challenges: “Thank You, Lord, for my life.” “Thank You, Lord, for my toxic workplace; You are teaching me patience.” “Thank You, Lord, for the struggles with my family; You are strengthening my love for them.” Prayer transforms a complaining heart into a grateful one.

3. Praise and Worship. Practicing small habits of gratitude can lead to a heart full of praise. As you incorporate thanksgiving into your daily life, it becomes easier to worship God, even in the smallest details. This cultivates a life filled with joy, love, faith, and contentment, despite trials.

The question now is: When will you start thanking God? How will you begin? Will you wait until the storm has passed, or will you thank Him right in the middle of it?

Here’s the challenge:

– Start your gratitude journal today. Write down three things you’re thankful for every morning and night, no matter what’s happening in your life.

– Pray intentionally. Thank God even for the things that hurt, trusting that He is using them to shape and strengthen you.

– Worship daily. Sing praises to Him and declare His goodness, even when it feels hard.

Gratitude is not just a response to blessings; it’s a decision to trust God’s goodness, regardless of the circumstances. As you practice this, observe how God transforms your perspective, fills you with peace, and converts even your darkest moments into a testimony of His grace. Will you take the first step today? The choice is yours. Start thanking God now, and allow Him to create a beautiful life in you.
